The Men of the Buckhead 50

A Local Men’s Club Since 1932

Buckhead 50 History . . .

The name ‘Buckhead Fifty Club’ was chosen in order to distinguish it from the other clubs in the Atlanta area.

The Buckhead Fifty started as a service group. Long before Buckhead became a neighborhood of the city of Atlanta, the Fifty gathered to do things for their community. It was the prestigious organization of north Atlanta, Even the governor was a member.

In those days, the Buckhead Fifty Club was interested in paving streets, providing street lights, collecting garbage and cleaning the streets, according to that official history. And, this being Buckhead, they also worried about parking, the history says.

Now the club’s work is mostly social. We adopt a family at Christmas, but members say that, for the most part, they just enjoy getting together at the American Legion Hut at Chastain Park to have supper, listen to a speaker and chat with one another.

The Buckhead Fifty meets once a month 11 months of the year, taking a vacation from their gatherings each July. During a recent meeting, several members said they simply like spending an evening with the others.

Michael Esco Moore, 75, passed away on September 4, 2025, in Atlanta, Georgia. Long-time Atlanta resident and known throughout the Atlanta business and non-profit community, Michael was a vibrant presence known for his profound ability to connect with people.

Born on July 5, 1950, in Phenix City, Alabama, Michael grew up on a small dairy farm. Michael was a dedicated Boy Scout and earned the rank of Eagle Scout, an accomplishment he felt strongly about, and supported many others through the process. He lived by the Boy Scout oath to do his duty for his God and his country, to obey the Scout Law, and to help other people at all times.

Michael graduated from Central High School in Columbus, Georgia, and later attended Auburn University in the fall of 1968 where he joined Chi Phi Fraternity.

In 1971, Michael and Karen met on a blind date in Auburn. They got married in 1973 and moved to Fort Ord in Monterey County, California, where Michael served in the U.S. Army for 3 years. In 1976, they moved back to Atlanta and started a family in downtown Decatur.

Michael’s unique ability to connect with others allowed him to develop meaningful and lasting relationships all around him. The lives of people across multiple communities and circles benefited from his extensive network and keen memory for details. His genuine interest in people’s stories and the well-being of all people made him a beloved figure in his social and professional circles.

Organizations where Michael served include: Atlanta Dogwood Festival, Atlanta Mission, Buckhead Business Association, Buckhead 50, Club E, National Speakers Association, Netweavers, Tender Love and Care Veterans Outreach and Farm, along with many men’s Bible study groups.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon and Maggie Moore; his wife, Karen Kuhn Moore; and his brother, James Moore. He is survived by his daughters: Jessica Moore Perez (Jonathan) and Molly Moore Martin (Ben); and his grandchildren: Lance, Selah, Luke, James, and Declan.

The family will be hosting a Celebration of Life on Monday, October 20, at 1:30 p.m. at Magnolia Hall in Piedmont Park (1320 Monroe Dr NE, Atlanta, GA 30306). In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Tender Love and Care Outreach and Farm for veterans (see tlcoutreach.org homepage for details about Michael’s involvement), a cause close to Michael’s heart and one he passionately supported since 2023.

Michael Moore's legacy is one of selflessness, service, connection, and community. A life truly well-lived and full of purpose, rich life experiences, and loving relationships. His memory will continue to inspire and resonate within the lives and communities he cherished so deeply.
